The Power Of Saying "NO"

Updated: Oct 8, 2020

In a universe of stacked plans, insatiable appetites for Insta-material, and ruled ends of the week, saying yes is practically ingrained in our way of life. It feels so normal to fire back a quick quot;yes!quot; text or email than saying no. quot;Noquot; can feel somewhat weird, or rude even. But, believe it or not, we're not helping ourselves with such a lot of yessing. Thereare lot of talks, and a ton to be said, for the power of Yes. Yes supports risk-taking, courage, and a kind way to deal with a life whose grace can't be minimized. But No- A metal grate that slams shut the window between one's self and the impact of othersmdash;is rarely celebrated. It's a hidden power because it is both easily misunderstood and hard to engage. We are likely unaware of the surge of strength we draw from No because, in part, it is easily mistaken or confused with negativity. It very well may be awkward to say quot;Noquot;. We've all experienced the swell of tension when hesitantly saying yes. Whether subconscious or not, we often say yes to things we'd preferably not do out of a desire to please. We would prefer not to disappoint and saying yes is far simpler and fulfillingmdash;for the short term. But long-term, it can forget about you pushed, overbooked, and angry. If you truly don#39;t have the bandwidth or would prefer not to do it, saying yes to something can wind up making you mad later. Also, regardless of whether you#39;re mad at the circumstance, mad at the person who asked you to do it, or mad at yourself for agreeing to do it- it's simply not good. 1. There is No shame in saying "NO". 2. Saying "NO" sets aside a few minutes for what you love. 3. Saying "NO" gives your "YES" more force. 4. It shields you from happy misuse by others. 5. Saying "NO" is standing up for yourself.
